The gateway was built at the intersection of two major arterial roads near London’s airport to welcome athletes and visitors to the 2001 Canada Summer Games. The site’s wide-open agrarian context required a unifying intervention with scale and mass. The design involves a series of vertical stone piers arranged in arcing and descending compositions at each corner forming a circle that marks the intersection. The circular form, a universal symbol of welcome and inclusion, emphasizes a sense of entry and passage. The stone piers, set within a backdrop of honeylocust groves, are anchored by meadow-like plantings.
