For one of the most awkward intersections in the City of London, known locally as ‘Ham and Eggs’, the engineered road improvements included streetscape enhancements to provide place making, connectivity and pedestrian safety. Sidewalk paving treatments reflecting and interpreting the recently completed Hamilton Road B.I.A. improvements were integrated as well as stamp patterned pedestrian crossings linking the intersection together. Two low planters with sloped profiles and bollards impart pedestrian safety, scale, and three-dimensional relief. Although the originally proposed street trees were deleted, the overall planting scheme unifies the complex intersection with urban tolerant daylilies and low ornamental grasses complemented by spring blooming daffodils and alliums that establish a sense of place and identity throughout the year.
